Coffee Pot Conversations hosted by An Englishman in Paris
Hello and welcome to Coffee Pot Conversations hosted by An Englishman in Paris. This podcast covers many aspects of Paris. These episodes have me talking about things I find interesting about Paris, guests talking about things they find interesting about Paris or guests talking about things I find interesting about Paris. A low-budget escapade, be prepared for a laid-back feel and a whole heap of information in some of the more factual episodes. I’m always looking for feedback, recommendations and suggestions. Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month (January to May, July to November)

1.9 A Conversation with Jasper
Tuesday May 14, 2024
Tuesday May 14, 2024
In this episode, I finally get to have a chat with Jasper.
Taking place in a local coffee shop to me, we discussed a few different aspects of Paris that Jasper either liked or found a little less to his taste.
We spoke of when this episode was recorded in relation to its release as well as a few other little bits and pieces.
“The next episode” was 1.7 Podcast Production whilst “The one after” referred to 1.8 Avec Claudine.
The London Landmarks Half Marathon website can be found here.
The hotel that we stayed in for the Paris half marathon was the Hôtel du Brabant in the 10th arrondissement.
When we first went to Paris as a family, we stayed at the Hôtel Saint Pierre in the 6th arrondissement.
PSG is the name given to Paris Saint Germain football club where stadium tours can be booked.
The three McDonald’s that we have visited in Paris are located:
McDonald's, 25 Rue de Dunkerque, 75010
McDonald's, 184 Rue de Rivoli, 75001
McDonald's, 208 Av. Jean Jaurès, 75019
My favourite restaurant is Jardin du Roy, located 28 Rue de la Huchette, 75005 - this is where Jasper enjoyed the steak.
Au Père Tranquille is where Jasper had the burger. It can be found at 16 Rue Pierre Lescot, 75001.
He mentioned Westfield, which is another name for Forum Des Halles at 101 Porte Berger, 75001.
And also outside is another restaurant. Myself and Nev ate in this branch of Léon de Bruxelles at Rue Rambuteau, 75001. However, we all ate at the one that is no longer to be found at 131 Bd Saint-Germain, 75006.
We will be watching the Paris Olympics Rugby 7s at the previously purposed built Stade du France.
We are also going to be watching the 3x3 Basketball at the temporary purpose-built arena at Place de la Concorde.
I mention that I may wear my French Abroad hoodie or one-of-a-kind baseball cap when we go. Since they appeared on my show for episode 1.3 French Abroad they have yet again moved - now located at 10 Rue Béranger, 75003.
I am currently listening to Revolutions Podcast on Podbean.

In this episode, after a rooftop visit to a screening of the classic, I take a wider look at the film and explore a little of the historical context.
The book in the intro that I mention is Mummified by Angela Stienne and I bought it at Waterstones in Picadilly Circus. If you read the book, you'll realise why it's relevant on a few levels.

1.5 Rory's Debut
Tuesday Mar 12, 2024
Tuesday Mar 12, 2024
In this episode recorded on Sunday, 5th August 2023, we fall knee-deep into my eldest's perceptions of what it means to be a guest on my show. We cover a handful of topics ranging from his schooling to his thoughts on the difference between a Paris break and a holiday in Ibiza.
A few of the points that I need to raise on this page to put the record straight and make things a little clearer are here:
As I said in the intro, there were a reported 1 million people in the Champs Élysées for New Year's Eve
The "fake champagne" was Champomy and we've still not had the bottle we have at home for after I completed the Paris running trilogy
I studied Spanish for 2 years before continuing to take another 2 years for my exams
Southend (now a city) is on the east coast of England - it's a regular location for Londoners to hit the beach on sunny days
Marta was the name of the lady at the Ibiza beach bar - which was actually the hut next to the swimming pool
Casey Laulala is the rugby player turned restaurant owner (in rue Saint-Denis) (re)turned (to New Zealand) real-estate agent
The Wales v England rugby match resulted in a 20-9 scoreline
Our hotel on our first visit was Hotel Saint-Pierre, which Rory always calls HSP
The hotel where I spoke to the receptionist after the Paris Half Marathon was Hôtel du Brabant

1.4 Romancing in Paris
Tuesday Feb 27, 2024
Tuesday Feb 27, 2024
I met up with Lily Heise for a Coffee Pot Conversation.
She has a podcast, is an author, a journalist and a tour guide.
Lily's website is Je T'Aime, Me Neither and has everything there in an easy-to-find way.
There’s Only One Paris: Tales for our Times is available on Amazon (make sure to choose your local market)
Episode 20 of Romancing in Paris can be heard through this link
We are having our Coffee Pot Conversation in Le Pigalle, 9, rue Frochot, 75009
Right opposite is Dirty Dick, 10, rue Frochot, 75009
The intimate Gustav Moreau Museum can be found at 14, rue de la Rochefoucauld, 75009
The Musée de la Vie Romantique is the museum about the Romantic movement, Hotel Scheffer-Renan, 16, rue Chaptal, 75009
The BBFC classification of 12A can be found on their website
I spent my stay this time in Paris at L’hôtel Bel Air 6, rue de la Voûte, 75012. The paintings were naughty but the hotel was very nice
My favourite walking tours of London are provided by London Walks - but there are also more tours available for the city
Lily's sexy side of Pigalle tour is available here
The sexy museum (now closed) is still mentioned on Atlas Obscura The unmistakable Moulin Rouge and the slightly secret Le Bar à Bulles
In case you don't know, this is the Eiffel Tower
One of my favourite photos of Paris that I've taken is here on my Instagram account
You can have inspiration for photos from Pont au Change can be seen on Instagram
You can read Lily's article on quiet spots to photograph the Eiffel Tower on her website
My favourite photo self-taken of the Eiffel Tower is on my Instagram profile
Paris Underground Radio is where I first found Paris Cachée that led me to Lily's Romancing in Paris podcast
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts are also found in the UK
Tim Hortons is also found in the UK (the honey cruller)
You can pop in and visit Boneshaker Donuts at 86 rue d'Aboukir, 75002 or check out their Instagram profile
The "locals" that I supported in the last podcast episode was French Abroad
Breakfast in America, the original diner in Paris, has their Instagram presence here and it was the diner at 17, rue des Écoles, 75005, that I visited. Meanwhile, also check out Craig's book (Pancakes in Paris)
The diner is only a few doors down from le Paris Art Hotel where I stayed back in 2021. Their Instagram account can be found here whilst the hotel is at 1, rue des Écoles, 75005
Frenchie Pigalle is the sister to the London restaurant that I was treated to for my birthday a few years back by Nev
Angelina's (not Angelique's) is the place for the famous hot chocolate. The queue can be found at 226, rue de Rivoli, 75001 whereas the Jardin du Luxembourg branch is at 19 rue de Vaugirard, 75006. To grab a takeaway, try 108, rue du Bac, 75007
Two years from start-up to the judging point will bring us to January 2026 - judging how successful this podcast is at that stage is very subjective. Different people use different yardsticks!
The song that inspired Lily's website name and book is Je T'Aime Moi Non Plus
The branch of Hema is located on rue de Rivoli

1.3 French Abroad

A chat with Christian and Anastasia from French Abroad. Their Instagram profile can be found with this link.
Two famous Instagram pages that are friends of the brand are Alex Teaches French and AT Frenchies - I followed them long before this episode was released!
The pop-up store that I was referring to was at Galerie Lafayette and an Instagram reel is here. They have also popped up at this Galerie Lafayette.
This interview took place at 19, rue Andre del Sarte, 750018.
But they then popped up at 15, Rue Dupin 75006.
However, they are now at 17, rue Andre del Sarte, 750018.
Le Bon Marche in the Marais is only one of many targets that the brand have their eyes set on.
The first media post that Christian made can be seen here.
The shop that I visited can be physically located here (it really is a very pretty part of Montmartre that rarely sees any tourists).
Because French Abroad keep popping up at different locations, my advice is to keep track of them through their Instagram account. If you can't make it to Paris, please make your purchase through their website - it's easy to navigate.

April in Paris
Thursday Jan 25, 2024
Thursday Jan 25, 2024
In this special episode, I met up with April Pett and had a coffee in Belleville, in the 20th arrondissement. We talked about her and her tours, covered the topic of French coffee and just generally had a Coffee Pot conversation.
What makes this episode special? It marks the 10th anniversary of April in Paris Tours and despite my impeccable planning of the first season, I had nowhere in the running order to place her. So, this is my first BONUS episode.
Here is a list of some of the things we spoke of:
April in Paris Tours
April's hometown is Thorold, in Ontario, Canada
I mention Au Père Tranquille, located at 16 rue Pierre Lescot, 75001, when talking with Nev
The fun fact that April mentions is "9,057 open-terraced cafés in Paris so if you went to a different one every day it would take you 29 and a half years to visit them all"
When talking about communities, I mention that I stayed at Hotel Bridget, 258 Rue des Pyrénées, 75020. In the 13th, with the largest Asian community in Europe, I stayed at Hotel des Ecrivains. Around 270 different cultures live around Belleville
At the time of the release, April had already moved and living in the suburbs
I stayed at Hotel du Parc Montsouris, 4 rue du parc Montsouris, 75014, for the Adidas Paris 10k
And to get to the boulangerie I went to, one must cross the Boulevard Périphérique, walk past Jo and Joe's to get to the Portuguese boulangerie
For the trio of créme Brulée, try L'Ecargot Bar, on rue de la Villette, as recommended by April
It was Cinque Terre that April visited
April stated that she lived in Sheffield for a few months and this could be why she likes Yorkshire Tea
My "local" coffee shop is generally a Costa - although you still can't beat a boulangerie
The fabulous Tim Hortons Canadian donut and coffee company
Wendy's, now also back in the UK, is a burger restaurant that reminds me of my childhood
The Yiddish Yellow Boulangerie in the Marias, Sacha Finkelsztajn, 27, rue des Rosiers, 75004
My go-to beigal bakery in Brick Lane is here at 159 Brick Lane, London, E1. I've been going here since at least the age of 13
The famous falafel place in the Marais is L'As du Fallafel, 34 rue des Rosiers, 75004 - however, the one without the queue that April visits is Chez Hanna, and it's down the road at 54 rue des Rosiers, 75004
The chat I had was with Lily Heise where I spoke about Angelina, not Angelique, the famous hot chocolate place in Paris (and also in Versailles!)
April's Versailles tour is here
The fabulous Ritz Paris has their website here, the address being 15, Place Vendôme, 75001
The posh toilet that April uses can be found at the Hôtel de Crillon, 10, Place de la Concorde, 75008
In this 8-minute Instagram Live/Reel, I doubt myself about the Place de la Concorde
April's off-the-beaten-path tour is here, the one covering Belleville can be found here
The little sing-a-long place is called La Vieux Belleville - pop in and mention my name. They won't know who I am but you can tell them April mentioned them on my podcast!
Three drinking tours; Champagne, Chablis and Versailles
Here is April's website and her Instagram page
April in Paris by Frank Sinatra or Ella Fitzgerald
The webpage on which April mentions other people is here and Sonja "the map lady" has her website here
April's favourite tea is Yorkshire Tea and they actually do an amazing tea bag for an amazing cuppa
Gino D'Acampo, the famous Italian chef who hosts Family Fortunes in the UK
The French quotation marks (les guillemets) look like « »

Moulin Rouge
Lido2Paris
